History of Captain Stag 50 years
From a Metal Doormat to One of Japan's Biggest Outdoor Brands
The unlikely origin story of Captain Stag — and why 50 years later, it still makes gear unlike anyone else.
In 1974, a Japanese entrepreneur named Fumio Takanami traveled to the United States on a market research trip. Walking through a park in America, he came across something he'd never quite seen in Japan: a family gathered around a large grill, cooking meat in the open air, completely at ease.
The scene stuck with him.
"I wanted to recreate the American barbecue style I saw, here in Japan."
Back home in Sanjo — a small city in Niigata Prefecture that has been Japan's center of metalworking and hardware manufacturing for centuries — Takanami got to work. He didn't have a grill, so he improvised: he took a metal doormat, removed the brush, propped it up over bricks by a riverbank, and cooked meat on it. It worked. And from that single improvised moment, one of Japan's most comprehensive outdoor brands was born.
What Captain Stag is — and where it comes from
Captain Stag is the outdoor brand of Pearl Metal Co., Ltd., a Japanese household goods manufacturer founded in 1967. The outdoor division launched in 1976 with Japan's first full-scale domestic BBQ grill — the Jumbo Barbecue Grill Type A — and has been expanding ever since.
The brand name comes from the stag: a male deer that leads its herd through the wild with strength and reliability, trusted by the animals that follow it. Captain Stag was built around that same idea — to be the brand that people reach for in the outdoors because they know it will hold up.
Today, Captain Stag carries over 4,000 outdoor products — tents, grills, camp furniture, gas burners, lanterns, canoes, kayaks, SUPs, sleeping bags, folding bikes, and more. It's an unusually broad catalog for a single brand, and that breadth is something the company is genuinely proud of: according to its founders, no other manufacturer in the world offers this range under a single brand name.
50 years of firsts — a brand history worth knowing
What makes Captain Stag interesting isn't just its range — it's the number of times it was first. Over five decades, the brand has a consistent track record of arriving at the right product before the market knew it needed one.
Japan's first full-scale BBQ grill
The Jumbo Barbecue Grill Type A launched BBQ culture in Japan. At a time when no grill or cooking grate existed in the Japanese market, this trunk-shaped portable grill opened the category.
Japan's first three-legged BBQ stand and personal water bottle
The tripod BBQ stand — stable on uneven ground, capable of hanging pots or grilling — earned a design patent. The Yanyan Straw Bottle pioneered the personal "my bottle" trend before it had a name.
Japan's first OD canister gas burner
The Outland dual-burner stove introduced the OD gas canister format to Japan. Captain Stag's logo spread across the country alongside the canister. A product that shaped the outdoor category for a generation.
Good Design Award — Camping Cooker Set
A triple-layer stainless steel cooker built with Tsubame-Sanjo craftsmen. Recognition that quality and outdoor use were not mutually exclusive.
The mesh tarp — before anyone else made one
The Rani Mesh Tarp added mesh side panels to what was then a simple overhead shelter — blocking insects, keeping airflow. A product that addressed a real problem and became a lasting standard in camp shelters.
The Aulic single burner — over 1 million sold
A compact gas burner with exceptional Japanese build quality at an accessible price point. Unusual for a single product to cross a million units in this category. Still in production and still loved by hikers.
The roll table that became a cultural icon
The Aluminum Roll Table Compact — affectionately nicknamed "Shika Bancho no Are" (that thing from the deer boss) by Japanese campers — became one of the most recognizable pieces of camp furniture in Japan. A design patent holder and a still-selling original.
The Hexagonal Fire Grill — a modern classic
Flat-packing, quick to assemble, striking when open. The hex fire grill became one of the definitive images of Japanese campfire culture and remains one of Captain Stag's best-known products internationally.
The KAMADO B6 Grill — defining solo camping
Folds to B6 paper size. Grills, cooks, burns wood. A single product that helped define the solo camping movement in Japan — and drew a direct line back to the original 1976 BBQ grill that started everything.
50th Anniversary
Captain Stag marks five decades of outdoor product development — from a metal doormat to 4,000+ products used across Japan and growing markets worldwide.
The products that defined each era
Japan's first serious domestic grill. Opened the entire BBQ category in a market where nothing like it existed.
The tent that launched family car-camping in Japan. Shifted "camping" from rugged to comfortable for an entire generation.
Over 1 million units sold. Still the most trusted Japanese gas burner for trekkers and solo campers.
Beautiful, flat-packing, quick to set up. The campfire product that put Captain Stag on the international radar.
Folds to the size of a notebook. Grills, cooks, burns. The product that defined a movement.
A large-capacity power station with a built-in TV — co-developed with battery specialists Dainichi Electronics. Camp entertainment meets emergency preparedness.
Why "Captain Stag" — and what the stag means
A stag — a male deer — moves with a herd through terrain that could be difficult or dangerous. The stag at the front doesn't just lead; it's accountable. The herd trusts it to find safe ground, reliable water, and good paths. That's the image the founders chose deliberately: not a product that looks impressive on a shelf, but one you trust when you're actually outside.
The brand name pairs "Captain" — a leader people choose to follow — with that stag. Together: the reliable leader in the outdoors. It's a simple idea that has held up across 50 years and over 4,000 products.
There's something worth noticing about brands that start from a specific, concrete problem — a father wants to grill the way he saw people grilling in America; there's no product that does that; so he makes one. Captain Stag has been that kind of brand for 50 years: problem-first, practical, and not particularly interested in trends for their own sake.
That's a long time to stay useful.
