One Company, Two Worlds: The Story of Pearl Metal

From a small hardware business in Sanjo, Niigata to the company behind two of Japan's most recognized lifestyle brands — Pearl Life and Captain Stag.

Most people who own a Pearl Life frying pan or a Captain Stag camping chair have never heard the name Pearl Metal. That's by design — the company has always let its brands speak for themselves. But behind both is the same Niigata manufacturer, the same founding philosophy, and nearly six decades of quietly making things better.

Here's the story of the company that connects them.

It started in a town built on metalworking

Pearl Metal Co., Ltd. was founded in 1967 in Sanjo, Niigata — a city with a centuries-old reputation as one of Japan's premier metalworking and tool-making regions. It's the kind of place where craftsmanship isn't a marketing word; it's simply how things have always been done.

The company began with household hardware, selling locally made metal goods. But its trajectory changed in 1975, when the founder traveled to the United States on a market research trip. Walking through a park, he came across a family grilling on a large barbecue — a scene that, at the time, had no real equivalent in Japan.

"I wanted to recreate the American barbecue style I saw, here in Japan."

That single observation eventually led to a new division, new products, and — decades later — an entirely new brand built around the idea of life outdoors.

Today

Two distinct brands, tens of thousands of original products, and a presence in markets across Asia, North America, and Europe.

Today, Pearl Metal is widely regarded in Japan as the largest housewares developer in its category — notable for being a planning- and design-driven company with no factories of its own, relying instead on a deep network of specialized manufacturing partners across Japan and Asia.

Two brands, one philosophy

Pearl Metal's catalog spans two very different parts of life: the kitchen and the outdoors. Rather than blend them into one identity, the company built two distinct brands — each with its own name, design language, and reason for existing.

Brand 01
PEARL LIFE
Everyday tools for a better kitchen.

Pearl Life is Pearl Metal's housewares brand — cookware, kitchen tools, storage, and dining essentials designed around a simple question: how can this be a little better? The line includes iron and stainless steel cookware (including the nitride-treated Nitrocraft series and the Sn-alloy Galaxy stainless collection), kitchen tools, food storage, and licensed international collections such as Pyrex, Corelle, and Visions.

Pearl Life products are built for daily use rather than display — practical, durable, and refined just enough to make routine cooking feel a little more considered.

Brand 02
CAPTAIN STAG
Go outside. Enjoy life.

Captain Stag is Pearl Metal's outdoor lifestyle brand, founded in 1976 and formally incorporated as a subsidiary in 2012. The name comes from the stag — a male deer that leads its herd through the wild — paired with "Captain," a leader people trust. It's a fitting symbol for a brand built to be a reliable companion on every outdoor trip.

What began as an effort to bring American-style barbecue to Japan has grown into one of the country's most comprehensive outdoor lineups: grills, portable stoves, tents, camp furniture, fire pits, and gear for everything from family car-camping to solo backcountry trips. In 2026, Captain Stag celebrates its 50th anniversary as a brand.

Why one company built two brands

It might seem unusual for a single manufacturer to operate two seemingly unrelated brands — kitchenware and outdoor gear don't typically share a customer journey. But the connecting thread isn't the product category. It's the way both brands are built.

Every Pearl Metal product, regardless of which brand it carries, starts from the same internal question that has guided the company since 1967: how can this be better? Not flashier, not cheaper — just better. A handle that fits more comfortably. A pan that lasts twice as long. A tent that sets up in half the time. This obsession with small, practical improvements is what both Pearl Life and Captain Stag have in common, even though one lives in the kitchen and the other lives in a tent.

Pearl Metal doesn't put its own name on the box. It puts Pearl Life on the kitchen products and Captain Stag on the outdoor gear — and lets each brand build its own relationship with the people who use it. But underneath both is the same company, the same town, and the same question that started it all in 1967.

Explore both brands — practical design for the kitchen, and gear built for life outdoors.
